Use SpeakAnyWay with Claude, ChatGPT, and other AI tools
SpeakAnyWay connects to the AI chat tool you already use, like Claude or ChatGPT. Once it's connected, you can ask for what you need in plain words ("make a dentist-visit board for Leo," "add swing and slide to the playground board"), and it happens right in your SpeakAnyWay account. Same boards, same symbols, same communicators. You just asked for it in a chat.
This is a beta. It works today, and we're still smoothing the edges. Tell us how it goes at hello@speakanyway.com.
What you'll need
- A SpeakAnyWay account. Any plan works.
- An AI chat tool that supports custom connectors (sometimes called "remote MCP connectors"). Claude and ChatGPT both do.
- The SpeakAnyWay connector URL:
https://mcp.speakanyway.com/mcp
Connect in Claude
- In Claude, open Settings → Connectors.
- Choose Add custom connector. Give it a name (like "SpeakAnyWay") and paste the URL above.
- Choose Connect. A SpeakAnyWay page opens. Sign in if you're asked, check that it names the right account, then choose Allow.
- Start a new chat. In the tools menu, make sure SpeakAnyWay is turned on.
A few notes:
- On Claude's free plan you can add one custom connector, so this works there too.
- On a Team or Enterprise Claude account, an organization owner adds the connector for everyone first. Then each person connects their own SpeakAnyWay account from Settings → Connectors.
- On your phone: add the connector once on the web or desktop app. It shows up in the Claude mobile app too.
Connect in ChatGPT
ChatGPT calls these custom connectors "plugins," and you turn on developer mode first.
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Security and turn on Developer mode. (Open it directly.)
- Choose Add new plugin. Give it a name (like "SpeakAnyWay") and paste the URL above. If it asks how to sign in, choose OAuth.
- Save it. A SpeakAnyWay page opens. Sign in if you're asked, then choose Allow.
- In a new chat, turn on SpeakAnyWay from the tools menu (the + button).
On a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspace, an admin has to allow developer mode before you'll see these options.
Things to try
Type these the way you'd say them. You don't need special wording.
Build something new
- "Make a board for a trip to the dentist for Leo."
- "Build a 12-word snack board with big tiles."
- "Here's a photo of the menu at our pizza place. Turn it into a menu board." (Menu images use AI credits; you'll be told the cost first.)
- "Build Maya a starter board set. She loves trains and music."
Change a board you already have
- "Add bubbles, swing, and slide to my playground board."
- "Add a Dentist page to Maya's board, with a folder tile that opens it."
- "On the snack board, rename 'cookie' to 'Oreo' and hide 'candy.'"
- "Put 'more' and 'all done' first on the lunch board."
- "Find a better image for 'swing.'"
Look things up and share
- "Who are my communicators in SpeakAnyWay?"
- "What's on Leo's morning routine board?"
- "Publish the bus board so his aide can open it, and give me the link."
What it can do
- See your boards (names and the words on them), your communicators' names, and the SpeakAnyWay symbol library.
- Build a single board from a list of words, a menu board, or a whole matched board set with the Board Builder.
- Change boards you can edit: add words, add a new page with a folder tile that opens it, rename or hide a tile, swap a tile's image, and reorder tiles.
- Share a board: get its link, and publish it if it isn't public yet.
It always shows you what it's about to do before anything big. It checks the name and word list before it builds a board, tells you the credit cost before it makes menu images, and lists everything that would go public before it publishes.
What it can't do
- Delete anything. "Remove a word" hides the tile, so you can bring it back in the app.
- Change your plan, billing, or account settings.
- See anything about your communicators beyond their names. No profile, age, emergency or care info, notes, or what they've been saying.
- Edit boards you don't own, like public-library boards or boards you sell as printables.
- Unpublish a board. Do that in the app, from the board's Settings.
What to expect
- Your plan works the same way it does in the app. Each new board or page uses one of your plan's boards, and AI features use your AI credits. If you're at a limit, the AI tells you plainly and links to upgrade, and nothing is created. See Plans and slot limits and AI credits and what each feature costs.
- Images can take a minute. Right after a board is built, some new symbols may still be getting their art. Give it a minute, then open the board.
- Words without a symbol become text tiles when you add words to an existing board. You can pick an image for them later, in the app or by asking.
- New boards start private. Nothing is public until you ask to publish it.
- A "custom connector" notice is normal. Your AI tool shows one because SpeakAnyWay isn't listed in its connector directory yet. It isn't a sign anything is wrong.
Disconnect
You can disconnect from either side. Either one stops the AI tool from reaching your account right away.
- In SpeakAnyWay: open Settings, find AI tool connections, and choose Manage connections. Choose Disconnect next to the tool.
- In your AI tool: remove SpeakAnyWay from its connectors (Claude) or plugins (ChatGPT) settings.
You can connect again any time.
Common questions
- Does this cost extra? No. It uses your normal SpeakAnyWay plan and AI credits. Nothing new to buy.
- What can the AI see? Only what's listed under What it can do: your boards, your communicators' names, and the symbol library. Your AI tool's own privacy terms cover what it does with your chat. See our privacy policy for ours.
- Can the AI mess up a board? It only changes what you ask it to, and nothing is ever deleted. If you don't like a change, fix it in the board editor or ask the AI to change it back.
- It says it can only look at boards, not change them. When you connected, the permission to build and change boards wasn't allowed. Disconnect, connect again, and choose Allow on the full list.
- Does it work with other AI tools? Any tool that supports remote MCP connectors with sign-in (OAuth) should work. Setup steps differ. We've tested Claude and ChatGPT.
- Something went wrong. Who do I tell? Email hello@speakanyway.com. While this is in beta we'd love to hear how it's going: what worked, what was confusing, and what you wish it could do.
